Are the people that you surround yourself with diversions from your goals, or the powerful engine that pushes you and celebrates you? When it comes to relationships, we are greatly influenced, whether we like it or not, by those people who are the closest to us, the people who we spend the most time with; or who we ‘follow’ on social media. One of the best motivational speakers of all time, Jim Rohn, has left this valuable theory with us when he said, “You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” This is a very basic truth that is critical to leveling up and creating the life you want.
Here are eleven tips to help you level up, get results and make an impact:
1. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH INSPIRATION
Who are the people that inspire you to be creative, to be empowered and to do something with your life? If you can think of one such person, start your tight-knit circle with him or her. This is the person who will help you generate high-quality results in your life.
2. ARE YOU THE SMARTEST PERSON?
Michael Dell, Billionaire Founder of Dell Technologies once told a group of students never to be the smartest person in a room. He’s right. It is quite difficult to build expertise if you think you have nothing new to learn. This is especially true for leaders who can choose to put the needs of their organization ahead of their ego.
3. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
One of the best ways to improve your life is through self-development. Take a good hard look at your strengths and how you can develop them to your benefit and those around you. Lifelong learning keeps your mind sharp and is a great way of developing new skills.
4. LOOK THE PART
Probably you have heard the saying, ‘fake it till you make it’. I totally agree with that. But I like to say, “Start pretending that you are already the person that you’re looking to become.” So if you want to become the top earner in your company, start putting your best self out, imitate their dress code. No Gucci or Louis Vuitton is necessary!
5. CRITICS AND SECRET HATERS
“You are not one of those people that can achieve all that.” Do you have people in your life who would say a thing like that? They’re perfectly fine with being miserable every single day. They are haters. People in your circle who contribute positively to your life will offer constructive criticism because they want to see you get better and better. Know the difference.
6. DEVELOP MENTAL TOUGHNESS
It takes more than effort to persist at your goals even when it seems like the odds are against your success. It takes mental toughness. Mentally tough people achieve their goals while those who are not, only dream, year after year. Choose to be resilient, even in the face of ridicule.
7. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS
Whenever you try to change or make a fresh start, there will always be friends or family members with an alternative concept or ‘that won’t work’ mentality. Never listen too much to loud objections to the detriment of your own instinct. After all, who other than yourself can know what’s best for you or what you can truly accomplish?
8. CHECK YOUR ATTITUDE
Sometimes it’s neither the haters nor the system; it’s you. Yes, that’s right! Your attitude influences your behavior and your behavior is evident by how you react to daily challenges and life’s worse curve-balls. Remember success is 80% attitude and 20% aptitude.
9. SOCIAL MEDIA PURGE
Did you know that we spend an average of 2 hours and 22 minutes on social media daily? That’s a lot of time to be influenced by ‘negative-nellies’ because you refuse to block and unfriend the people who drag you down. Make a decision to purge your social media accounts and follow inspired and creative, and successful people, which will in turn inspire you to succeed.
10. ZIP IT
Nobody loves a whiner and you can’t focus on solving your challenges if you are continually whining about everything. Set a plan to overcome your challenges – get help if needed – but sometimes the best thing you can do for your growth is to learn when communication should be minimized for your benefit.
11. BE KIND TO YOURSELF
You have to be kind to yourself especially when life gets challenging – as it will. Try not to get too caught up in a negative spiral of limiting thoughts. Remember, your thoughts are things!
